The children will study their culture, heritage and traditions through our project entitled ‘Our European Jigsaw - where every piece is important’. The school will exchange the cross curricular work with pupils from other European Countries - to include a joint recipe book and a shared web blog.
The project is divided over the two years into sub-topics that are relevant to the pupils with special needs in each participating school:
Year 1 will focus on the pupils' own country, with specific reference to areas that can be visited; places of interest etc. The focus will include geographical features, contrasting localities, historical sites and areas of outstanding natural beauty. Pupils will have the opportunity to explore their surroundings by making visits to places of interest.
Year 2 will develop understanding of cultural heritage, traditions and celebrations. The focus will include annual festivals and school celebrations. These will include cultivating vegetables, cooking, music and an enterprise project.
Throughout the project, pupils and staff will communicate with each other about their work through a variety of ways - eg. video conferencing; emails and DVDs.
The thematic cross curricular approach sits well within the curriculum of all partner schools. This approach will help develop key skills and competencies in the pupils. The project work will be developed through traditional subjects including I.T.; global citizenship and the personal and social development of pupils. Pupils will develop a greater understanding of their own culture as well as discovering a great deal about the culture, traditions and languages of the partner countries.
