Kirkevoll is a school located in the countryside outside the city of Tønsberg, 100 km south of Oslo. We have about 300 students. Our school has a department for children with special needs and this year there are 14 students taught in this section. The children have severe disabilities and need assistance all through the day.  We have some students diagnosed with autism, some with severe CP, some with Downs Syndrome, Angelmans syndrome, and others with an unspecific diagnosis. All students have a learning difficulties at some level. Our department for students with special needs also has an after school program, like the students in the rest of the school. We are using the same areas for both school and after school program, and this makes it predictable for the students. The staff who works with the students with special needs come from different backgrounds and experiences, but all teachers have a degree in special education at some level.
Our school has great outdoor area with lots of space for the children to do all sorts of activities. Several of the activities are also designed for the children with different disabilities.

Norway - Kirkevoll School has joined Comenius project for some years now with a great success. It gives our school, teachers and students, and other staff, lots of motivation for the work.  Working together with teachers and students from all over Europe gives us a better understanding of our differences and similarities. We learn a lot about culture and traditions in each country, and we discuss teaching methods and how to improve practices in the school. We are very much looking forward to meeting other schools with a department like ours, to be able to share knowledge and experience when it comes to teaching methods within special education. Travelling and visiting the project partners is a great motivation for the staff.
